IONIZATION Smoke Alarms Are DEADLY

The Alarming Truth

by Chief Marc McGinn | August 2010

WFSF 2020 Update

"When we’re asked why the public hasn’t been warned, (most people don’t even know there are two completely different smoke alarm technologies), after more than twenty years of fighting this campaign, we can give an authoritative answer, i.e. “Because of over forty years of misinformation and the fear of litigation.”

Advising Not Warning - A Deadly Compromise

Queensland arguably has the world's best photoelectric-only legislation. Ionization alarms do not

comply with the 2017 legislation and are not sold in Queensland.

However, most authorities merely advise that photoelectric alarms are "better."

For legal and political reasons, and because most authorities do not know the facts, the public

have not been warned about the life-threatening defects with ionization alarms. Ionization alarms

have been scientifically proven, by Australian government (CSIRO) test data, independent

scientific tests by the New Zealand Consumer organization, and by legal precedent to be unable

to detect the critical, early smoldering stage of most fatal fires.

More:

1). Ionization Smoke Alarm Litigation

     Beasley Allen Law Firm

NB: Beasley Allen Law Firm won a landmark case using Australian Government (CSIRO) test data

to prove ionization smoke alarms are unsafe.

    Brunning Law

NB: Bruning Law won the world's largest jury verdict (U.S. $50M including $30M punitive damages)

against an ionization smoke alarm manufacturer: Gordon vs BRK Brands, Inc.)

2). WFSF '...Criminal Act Of Negligence?' Report warning about ionization smoke alarm litigation

when failing to disclose the known limitation of ionization smoke alarms to consumers.

Legislation - U.S.A.:
Ionization Alarms Unable to Pass New U.S. Smoke
Alarm Standard with Legitimate Smoldering Fire Test
Ionization technology eliminated in new edition of U.S. smoke
alarm standard, i.e. UL217 8th edition - effective date 30 June 2021

Smoke Alarms Get Smarter in 2021

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is the world's largest standards testing organization.

'UL Certified'

After 30 June 2021, to be 'UL Certified' smoke alarms must pass UL's new, legitimate smoldering fire tests. UL's existing (flawed) smoldering fire testing has allowed ionization alarms to be certified as safe when they are not - see 'UL Sued' below.

Australian & N.Z. Scientific Testing Exposes UL's Flawed Standard

Consumer New Zealand & Australian Government (CSIRO) scientific testing proves

that the existing ionization alarms in millions of homes around the world may fail to

alert occupants early enough to escape from smoldering fires.

World Fire Safety Foundation Comment:

The Forty Year Battle to Correct Flawed Smoke Alarm Standards

1976 - Richard Patton distributes 'The Smoke Detector Fraud' report to over 3,000 fire chiefs warning about flawed US standard.

1999 - Washington Post publishes award-winning ionization exposé, 'How Safe Are Products Bearing the UL Mark?'
2005 - Feb: WFSF Warning on TV New Zealand: "...the standards themselves are faulty."

2005 - Oct: WFSF Chairman's Letters to UL warning that their UL217 smoke alarm standard is flawed:
